Sustainability is in our DNA. We believe in minimising our use of natural resources and to leave the planet in the same - or better - condition than we found it. That’s why we encourage travel to work on public transport, use low-carbon and carbon neutral hosting, choose suppliers based on their environmental credentials and are passionate about the sustainability of air transport.

We passionately believe that business and consumers should be armed with the best information on which to make their purchasing decisions - particularly when it comes to making more environmentally friendly choices - this is why we developed our CO2 calculator and CARE Index. Peter Hind, CEO | RDC

Fuel burn modelling is one of our core capabilities and, with fuel burn a key driver of CO2 emissions, we have the ability to calculate and report the estimated CO2 output from flying. Our accredited and independent methodology puts us ahead of our rivals. For accuracy on CO2 emission data we believe we can’t be beaten.

Better method, better data

You may have seen many other CO2 calculators on the market but the methodology behind ours sets it apart. It has been specifically developed to provide the most flexible and accurate estimations of CO2 emissions available.

Data in two dimensions

Others: Two-dimensional output

Typically most CO2 calculators on the market only take a couple of factors into consideration when calculating emissions such as route and aircraft type.

Data in three dimensions

Ours: Multi-dimensional output

We take route and aircraft type plus more granular factors such as engine type, age, fuel burn, and much more to give you a much more detailed picture.

Why is the RDC methodology better?

ICAO calculate fuel burn for the specific aircraft type operating a flight segment and convert the resultant fuel burn to CO2 using the standard conversion factor.

The Eurocontrol SET uses a statistical approach based on fuel burn samples of real life flights operations to produce a fuel burn and CO2 estimate, aimed at small emitters – usually operators of business jets.

The DEFRA methodology differs from RDC, ICAO and the SET in that rather than seek to calculate fuel burn and convert that to CO2, it pre-calculates “emissions factors” that can be applied to short, medium or long-haul flights to determine emissions-per-seat, based on a basket of aircraft types operating over average flight distances

RDC calculate fuel burn in a similar way to ICAO but the significant difference is in the allocation of emissions:

  • RDC maintains a comprehensive database of airlines, aircraft and engine types and seating configurations of more than 35,000 airframes which enables a more granular calculation to be made.
  • The application of airline-specific seat configurations allows emissions to be attributed on a per seat, per passenger or per cabin/seat basis, more accurately highlighting the difference in emissions per passenger and enabling more informed customer decisions about the impact of their travel.

CARE Index

The CARE Index is our unique ranking of CO2 efficiency and sustainability criteria, designed to enable the passenger to make an informed comparison between two or more airlines on the same route. We can create a CARE Index score for any route, airline and aircraft type, with the score reflecting

  • Fuel efficiency of the aircraft type
  • Efficiency of the airline - seat capacity, load factor
  • Use of Sustainable Alternative Fuels
  • if the route is part of a compliance or regulatory emissions programme such as CORSIA, EU ETS etc
  • Whether the operator offsets emissions over and above that which is legally required

The CARE index has been designed to be a force for change, giving consumers better insight into the environmental impact of their chosen airline that will also help to shape airline sustainability strategies.

API or Dataset? It’s your choice

RDC recognise that customers will want to incorporate our CO2 emission data in a way that best suits their internal systems. To cater for this we can provide both Raw Datasets or RESTful API services.
